DJI / Autel Demo for Colorado Agencies

Let’s face it, who doesn’t like a good fire? So when we were invited back to the Platte Valley Burn Building, we jumped at the chance to show off the latest thermal technology. The two systems that we took with us were the DJI Mavic 2 Enterprise Advanced and the Autel EVO II 640T v2 Enterprise. With very similar features, showing these two products would highlight the two platforms in a near-real world scenario.

The embedded video here will show some of the features of the two systems as well as an interview with the Fire Captain to get his feedback on the different systems

The Setup

The burn building setup consists of a multi-story structure that can replicate a structure fire using either wood or propane for fuel. Behind the main building is a “burn behavior” building that can be used to create different fire situations such as backdraft.

DJI Mavic 2 Enterprise Advanced

The Mavic 2 Enterprise Advanced features a dual-camera setup with both a visual (RGB) camera and a thermal camera. Since both systems use the same thermal sensor, we expected to get the same results from both systems. On the visual camera side, things are a little different.

Thermal Camera

  • Focal Length: 9mm (38mm equivilant)
  • Sensor Resolution: 640×512 @ 30Hz
  • Digital Zoom: 16x

Visual Camera

  • Sensor: 1/2: CMOS, Effective Pixels: 48m
  • Focal Length: 84° FOV, 24mm equivilant, Aperture f/2.8, Focus 1m to ∞
  • Digital Zoom: 32x
  • Max Image Size: 8000×6000
  • Max Video Resolution: 3840×2160

Autel EVO II 640T Enterprise

As mentioned before, the EVO II 640T uses the same thermal sensor as the Mavic 2 Enterprise Advanced so the image quality is the same. The big difference is that the Mavic 2 Enterprise Advanced will display both the thermal and visual images in a side-by-side setup where the EVO II 640T uses a picture-in-picture format and the EVO II 640T has a slightly narrower focal length. The visual camera is where the biggest difference is. The Autel EVO II 640T’s visual camera can shoot video in 8k.

Thermal Camera

  • Focal Length: 13mm
  • Sensor Resolution: 640×512 @ 30Hz
  • Digital Zoom: 8x

Visual Camera

  • Sensor: 1/2: CMOS, Effective Pixels: 48m
  • Focal Length: 84° FOV, 25.6mm equivilant, Aperture f/2.8, Focus 1m to ∞
  • Digital Zoom: 32x
  • Max Image Size: 8000×6000
  • Max Video Resolution: 7680×4320

Summary

With both systems using the same thermal sensor, the image quality between the Mavic 2 Enterprise Advanced and the EVO II 640T is basically identical. Both systems have very similar features including the included accessories (speaker, spotlight, and strobe). The differences on the visual camera may seem significant on paper, but shooting in 8k with the same bit rate as shooting in 4k does not really add any additional value.

If you already have Mavic 2 systems or EVO II systems, then your choice may be centered more around the existing batteries, accessories, and product knowledge than the difference between the platforms.
